Gouves is not a quiet holiday place, but also not the absolute party place like Limenas Chersonisou or Malia some kilometres further to the east. The village has no real centre and therefore little Cretan flair. Most hotels, taverns and shops were built in the tourist boom of the last decades. Places of interest Gouves Crete The great attraction in Gouves is the large and very popular Aquarium of Crete, for which we have published a separate page in this internet travel guide: Click here
Gouves also has a theme park on dinosaurs called "Dinosauria Park". Replicas of partly very large dinosaurs are exhibited. There is also a dinosaur hospital (Dino Hospital), a museum, 2 cinemas (5D-7D), a playground, a restaurant and much more. Opening hours Dinosauria Park Gouves: Daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., entrance fees to the Dino Park Crete: Children over 12 years and adults pay 10 euros admission, smaller children 8 euros, children under 4 years are free. Some children are very enthusiastic about the dinosaur park on Crete. The amusement park is also open in winter. Status of information: Spring 2017, current 2018: This winter (2017 / 2018) the Dino-Park Crete is closed until March. Beaches Gouves Crete Most of the inhabitants of Heraklion appreciate the beaches of the region. There are several beaches, some of them longer, with beautiful yellow sand and clear water. These beaches are popular with tourists and locals alike. The beach of Gouves is interrupted in many places by rocky bays. In contrast to the big tourist resorts further to the east, Gouves is not so densely built-up. In many places, there is no house 50 or 100 metres away.. This makes the atmosphere in Gouves in town and on the beach much calmer and more relaxed than in the mega tourist resort of Chersonissos a few kilometres further east. The beach of Gouves is the busiest on weekends, although the locals have time to go to the beach.
Overnight Gouves In Gouves there is a larger campsite called "Creta Camping". The campsite is only a few metres from the beach. Gouves also has several large luxury hotels and several other hotels, guesthouses and apartments and room rentals, often family-run. Approach Gouves Another advantage of a holiday in Gouves is the good accessibility. By car: From Heraklion or the airport, take the expressway in the direction of Agios Nikolaos. The exit to Gouves after about 15 kilometers is signposted. By the way, the village has grown together with the neighbouring Kokkini Hani. Thus, one can also follow the signs to Kokkini Hani if one wants to go to Gouves. By bus: Here, too, the connections are excellent. However, the buses do not stop at the sea, but at the country road, about 100 to 200 meters parallel to the coast. There are several bus stops in the long town. During the season there are many buses on the route Heraklion - Kokkini Hani - Gouves - Chersonissos - Malia. During the day there are usually 3-4 bus connections per hour in both directions. In the high season the buses are sometimes overcrowded at peak times. Tickets are cheap, depending on the destination about 2-3 euros easy. There are tickets in the bus, only if one gets on at the bus station Heraklio or at the airport, one should buy the ticket before at the counter. Another place with a beach in the region is Karteros: More info A village with good taverns not far away is Koutouloufari: More info
