The Greek National Football Museum is located in a shopping street in the heart of the city. It is probably a converted shop. As soon as one enters the exhibition, one is warmly welcomed by the museum owner Nikos Flekkas (Νίκος Φλέκκας). He proudly shows some of his many thousands of collection pieces. Nikos asked the visitors about their nationality and favourite club. He then shows everything he has about the country and the club in his collection. Nikos is a very nice guy and speaks good English. He is the president of the fans of the national team of Greece.
Opening hours football museum Chania: When Nikos is on Crete, he is from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 14 pm in his football museum. He is not there when the Greek national team is playing. He flies to every game and every tournament Greece qualifies for. This also applies to matches abroad. He was, of course, at the biggest match of his life in the stadium when Greece became European Champion in Lisbon in 2004. He also took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA, for example. Sometimes Nikos is also open in the evening for a few hours (about 18 to 20 o'clock) and on Saturday. He usually hangs a note with the opening hours of the football museum for the next days in the shop window. Admission Greek National Football Museum: Nikos does not charge admission and has nothing to sell. He financed the museum himself and doesn't want to earn any money with it. He comes every day to show his collection of national teams to interested visitors. He is a real fan, probably the biggest football fan in Greece. By the way, only very few countries in the world have a national team museum.
Location and directions: The best way to get there is on foot. The football museum is located in the city centre of Chania, which is mostly a pedestrian zone. It is in the alleyway that passes directly behind the central market hall. The world famous Venetian harbour is about 400 metres away. Parking is not easy in this area. Address: Greek National Football Museum, Tsouderon Street 40, Chania, Crete, Greece Exhibits of the Museum Jerseys: Original jerseys by world-famous football players are the focus of the Museum of Football in Crete. Nikos is, of course, particularly proud of the jerseys of his team from Greece. Of all the Greek players we knew, he was able to show us jerseys. Football fans from abroad are amazed by the jerseys of the superstars of football in the world. Whether Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Gryuff, Messi or Ronaldo, Nikos has at least one jersey. We especially liked a legendary jersey of the national team of Argentina with the back number 10, worn by none other than Diego Armando Maradona. It hangs directly at the entrance.
A great idea is to build up the jerseys of the national team of Greece to a Greek flag. Greece plays either in blue or in white, the two colors of the Greek flag. However, these are not all jerseys of the Greek national team in the museum. Nikos has much more, including some very nice older jerseys for example. from the 70s. Balls: Especially Nikos Flekkas likes to show his original ball of the final of the European Championship 2004. The 4.7.2004 was the big day of football in Greece. For the first and so far only time the national team of Greece won a title. The country became European Football Champion. Since then, 4 July has been an important day not only in the USA, but also in Greece, at least among the many football fans. Pennants and tickets are further objects worth seeing in the football museum of the Greek national team in Chania.
Of course Nikos doesn't throw away a ticket, but issues them all. In the soccer museum in Chania there are also many other things like great photos. Altogether a grandiose football collection. The big and famous market Hania is near.
